         Poetry can best be defined as literary work in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm; poems collectively or as a genre of literature. They are meant to express or convey a certain message. Poetry can be found in many types of work such as song lyrics, commercials, and rap. Many songs can relate to pieces of poetry by using tone and theme to communicate the same ideas. The song “Hello” by Adele directly relates to the poems , “A Love Song” by William Carlos Williams and “I Am Not Yours” by Sara Teasdale. They all make the reader feel a source of sympathy with the theme of heart-break and emotion.             I received more than an education leaving this class. I gained new friends, abilities, ideas, and perspectives. It was an experience where I will leave knowing I gained something. What I liked most about the class was our class discussions. Whether it was fishbowl or just a class lecture, we constantly got to hear everybody's questions and thoughts. I gained new perspectives from hearing peoples opinions. It helped me think outside of the box and realize things maybe I hadn't thought of before. I met people in the class who I had things in common with. I was able to relate to many people. I was also able to gain new insight even from the people who I didn't relate with. The class blog was a great way to share our ideas as well. Reading my classmates published writing sparked new ideas in my head and inspired me. I got to see how intelligent my classmates are.            Freedom can be defined as the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. There has been a constant fight for freedom all throughout history. This idea can be supported by Egalitarian beliefs. In Webster’s dictionary, Egalitarianism is “the belief in human equality especially with respect to social, political, and economic affairs; a social philosophy advocating the removal of inequalities among people”. Many different types of people with all different backgrounds have faced struggles and fought battles just to gain the equality that they knew they deserved. A famous man named Martin Luther King Jr. was a leader of the civil rights movement. Migano Brady EGL 102 20 April 2018 Marginalization in Society Marginalization is a serious form of oppression that can have major effects on individuals socially, economically and politically. Within the short stories The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin and White Woman of Color by Julia Alvarez , you see the roccurance of the major theme of marginalization. The main character Ms. Mallard in The Story of an Hour shows feelings of joy after finding out she is able to be “free”. In the past she was marginalized based on her gender and role in society by her husband. After his death she feels a sense of relief as though she’s not being oppressed by him anymore. Julia Alvarez talks about her experiences of marginalization in The White Women of Color . She explains the struggle and hardships she faced growing up as a Dominican girl in the United States.
