PUB 5- My Verse
Poetry can best be defined as literary work in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm; poems collectively or as a genre of literature. They are meant to express or convey a certain message. Poetry can be found in many types of work such as song lyrics, commercials, and rap. Many songs can relate to pieces of poetry by using tone and theme to communicate the same ideas. The song “Hello” by Adele directly relates to the poems , “A Love Song” by William Carlos Williams and “I Am Not Yours” by Sara Teasdale. They all make the reader feel a source of sympathy with the theme of heart-break and emotion. The tone of both the songs and the poem is a sad yet slow tone that goes along with the emotion you feel with heartbreak.
Heartbreak is a feeling that everyone experiences throughout their life. The song “Hello” by Adele is a song that enhances your feelings towards missing a lover. Adele’s song is about missing someone from the past and how she wants to get back in communication with them. Adele states, “So hello from the other side, I must have called a thousand times, to tell you I'm sorry for everything that I've done, but when I call you never seem to be home.” She's expresses feelings of sorrow and grief. In the poem “A love song” by William Carlos Williams , it expresses the same emotion. The mournful lyrics relate back to the theme of heartbreak when it recites , “What have I to say to you, when we shall meet? Yet—I lie here thinking of you.” Even though this poem was written in the early 19th century, it shows that heartbreak is a normal and natural emotion that humans feel when it comes to their lovers.
The theme of Heartbreak relates to the song “Hello”, the poem “A Love Song”, as well as the poem “I Am Not Yours”, by Sara Teasdale. This poem describes someone showing emotion of heartbreak by wanting a specific person to love them. Within the poem it states, “Oh plunge me deep in love—put out my senses, leave me deaf and blind, swept by the tempest of your love, a taper in a rushing wind.” She is explaining how she wants to be loved by someone and get a certain rush of feelings. This relates back to the song “Hello” by wanting something from their lover but only getting feelings of sadness out of it.
The tone of the song “Hello” is a very serious yet deep and powerful. This therefore expresses the strong feelings behind her emotion. The song remains solemn during the verses, but during the choruses, the voice is higher and more meaningful. She uses many words and phrases to set the tone throughout the song such as ‘healing, ‘breaking your heart’, ‘million miles’, tried, sorry, hello, ‘tear you apart’, young. Both the song and the poem “A Love Song” are very descriptive and specific with their words. They use imagery to describe the emotions when listening to the song or reading the poem. The whole song itself is a slow and sad song when you listen to it. When reading the poem, you read it with a sympathetic tone as well.
The poem ‘I Am Not Yours’ also connects back to the tone of the song “Hello” by Adele. This piece is another poem with very descriptive words and phrases chosen. It states “Not lost, although I long to be, lost as a candle lit at noon, lost as a snowflake in the sea.” She is very specific when describing her feelings towards the situation being described in the poem to show the complexity of it. The song and the poem both set serious tones to express how meaningful it was.
“Hello” by Adele strongly connects to the poems “A Love Song”, and “I Am Not Yours” through theme and tone. All of the poetry within these works of literature convey the message of heart break and the strong emotions that come with it. The poetry in the song and the poems both have an intended effect on the reader/listener. All of the pieces are very passionate pieces with an aim to create feelings of that same emotion of sorrow.
Nice work Grace!
